This is a script idea I had for a short Sci-fi film similar to Sunshine or Apollo13.
Flashforward:
[Set to Igor Stravinski – The Rite of Spring]
A black man walks around with a futuristic spear on an orange planet. An alien emu looks up, and is killed. By the campfire, the man eats the creature...he looks up guiltily.
Intro:
On Earth, in an attempt to quell all wars, multiple democracies have established a Terra Firma government that treats everyone as Terrans, regardless of race or nationality. It has been running for 5 years.
As a result, the space-race has re-initiated, and many vessels have been sent out of the solar system on recon and deepspace exploration missions.
Story starts:
We focus on one ship, a science vessel, studying the spectrographs of a close planet as they travel towards it.
The ship is maintained by engineers and scientists, and their black captain Oscar Harrison. He is a carnivore, his chief science officer Eileen is a vegetarian.
The onboard foodstocks contain a farm and growing centres for GM Chickens and Plants. In an accident, the plant centre is destroyed – oxygen is maintained by only the inedible plants. Everyone (including the vegetarians) must eat chicken.
Later on, the chickens are also destroyed and the egg stocks contaminated.
With only limited rations the large crew must be patient and find ways to genetically duplicate food whilst new Chicken embryos are grown, but many of the crew are impatient, and begin to go insane and turn to cannibalism.
Over this tense period, the crew’s morality is tested to breaking point, as everyone questions their ability to stay true to the code of the united Terrans. To remain patient and peaceful.
Various people die.
Various things remind the remaining shipmates of the madenning issues of killing things to survive.
At one point, the science officers discover a plant-like mould growing from the fuel tanks, and other minimalist food sources viable for breeding – but the crew questions the speed in which this can be cloned.
Finally, the first GM chicken embryo is procured, and the crew are joyous – only to find out that there is a fuel leak. They hide in the crash bunker as the hull cracks open.
In 2 days time, the ship cascades into the planet it had been observing.
On the landscape all members die, suffocating in their helmets, except for the Captain, who opens his helmet at the last breath in a leap of faith, and discovers the atmosphere is breathable.
An alien animal, similar to an Emu, strolls by, and he kills it. While eating alone in this barren wasteland, an aura of guilt overcomes him.
-----
Concept behind idea:
What is natural to us, to maintain our charade of order and law, or to revert to Cavemen hunter-gatherers and to kill people and animals to eat? Are we so scared of the killing of animals for meat, are we so scared of our own animal sides?
